CHOIR MINISTRY
THE CHOIR MINISTRY
Melodic music is a very important element in worshipping our God and Savior! musical instruments have been an important part of praise and worship for thousands of years! (Psalm 32:2-3; 150:3-5)
So, as a very young missionary in Western Kenya, I was grieved by the lack of melody in the congregational singing. The only instrument they had were large, homemade, drums, which were beaten loudly for rhythm purposes. I thought it would be so much better if a guitar could be added to provide melody. So, I found a cheap, second hand, guitar and found a chord chart, and began teaching myself to play. My talent never developed to a high level, but eventually, I could play well enough to add chord backgrounds to the worship songs, which everyone seemed to like better than the bass drum.
This fledging skill with a guitar, along with our son, Stephen’s, interest in the mandolin, and Tim’s harmonica, all contributed to the musical aspect of the early days of Mt. Kenya Baptist Church. So, I was the original song leader, as well as choir facilitator.
After a few years, others were inspired to take up the guitar, and eventually the piano and keyboard. Pastor Benjamin Rono became functional, and then Pastor Onesimus Kibera also learned guitar, and filed a needed role in leading congregational singing.
Over the years, we have been blessed with many others who have contributed to this important ministry. Vernon & Mary Smith (with his guitar and her lovely voice) made a significant impact on the choir ministry during their 3 years with us. And, of course, today, we have one of the most talented, as well as spiritually motivated, worship teams to be found anywhere!
God is worthy to be praised with the very best music we can, by His grace, achieve!
